How not to get a promotion

My boss will notice

👩🏼‍💻I’ll work hard, my boss will notice how great I am and I will be promoted.👩🏼‍💻
🙅🏼‍♀️ Never ever use this strategy for your promotion.🙅🏼‍♀️
When I was young I was in the trap of this wrong belief. I wasted my time. I could get promotions faster, I could get the required skills. But I waited that everything will just happen.🧙🏻‍♀️
Talk to your manager. Your manager is interested in growing people. She is your partner in your promotion journey.

I would like to be a <>, what I need to do to get there?

True story

🔴 I was a QA lead and I wanted to transition to a project manager. I asked this question and the manager of my manager said: “ok, take project B”.I was shocked!!! That was so simple⁉️

🔴 Another time, I asked this question and get the list of qualifications I need to develop. You can imagine how inspired and passionate I was. And the thing is that part of the list was expected for me, but another part wasn’t.

Your boss

Talking to your manager is important because you cannot always have your manager’s perspective. Having goals and metrics will make your promotion journey clear and inspiring.

Another benefit of talking to your boss is taking advantage of his bigger picture perspective. Maybe there are plans to open a position you don’t know about. Your boss can have you as a candidate for this position. You will never know about this opening if you didn’t talk to your manager.

Also, you may think that you need to develop one set of skills, but for your promotion, you need a slightly different set of skills. Your boss can guide you and point to your blind spot. Use your boss as a resource, as a partner in your journey to your promotion.
