Talking to your manager is important because you cannot always have your manager’s perspective. Having goals and metrics will make your promotion journey clear and inspiring.
Another benefit of talking to your boss is taking advantage of his bigger picture perspective. Maybe there are plans to open a position you don’t know about. Your boss can have you as a candidate for this position. You will never know about this opening if you didn’t talk to your manager.
Also, you may think that you need to develop one set of skills, but for your promotion, you need a slightly different set of skills. Your boss can guide you and point to your blind spot. Use your boss as a resource, as a partner in your journey to your promotion.
